Interpreting plots, axes, units, and trends quickly
Learn step-by-step with practice exercises built right in.
Before interpreting any figure, read both axis labels and units, then the legend. Most figure traps exploit students who look at curve shape before noticing a log scale, an inverted axis, or that the y-axis measures inhibition rather than activity.
Identify the control condition and compare each experimental curve or column against it, one difference at a time. In tables, scan for the row or column that breaks the pattern โ that anomaly is usually what a question targets.
Michaelis-Menten and Lineweaver-Burk plots (intercepts give and ), titration curves (buffering plateaus at each ), dose-response curves, absorbance spectra, and gels (bands ordered by size). Know what a shift in each direction means biologically.
