Axes First, Curves Second

Before interpreting any figure, read both axis labels and units, then the legend. Most figure traps exploit students who look at curve shape before noticing a log scale, an inverted axis, or that the y-axis measures inhibition rather than activity.

Compare the Right Things

Identify the control condition and compare each experimental curve or column against it, one difference at a time. In tables, scan for the row or column that breaks the pattern — that anomaly is usually what a question targets.

Common MCAT Figure Types

Michaelis-Menten and Lineweaver-Burk plots (intercepts give $K_m$ and $V_{max}$), titration curves (buffering plateaus at each ), dose-response curves, absorbance spectra, and gels (bands ordered by size). Know what a shift in each direction means biologically.
