Words in Context at the 700-800 Level
Hard vocabulary items are built from four structural archetypes, and each tells you where the answer hides.
Colon-defined blanks. The sentence defines the blank after it appears (colon, dash, or appositive). Test each choice against that definition clause by clause — the trap is a near-synonym that's one notch off: harsher (worthless vs unremarkable) or aimed at the wrong target (imprecise attacks the measurement when the flaw is what the number reveals — uninformative).
"Rather than" scaffolds. The blank is defined by contrast: "served to ______ rather than to overturn." The answer is the mid-strength move — temper, complicate, qualify, circumscribe. Both extremes appear as distractors; the scaffold forbids them.
Secondary meanings and collocations. Common words appear in technical senses (appreciate = detect, warrant = justify, ratify = confirm what already exists). Never eliminate on the everyday meaning. When the blank takes a preposition, several choices will be idiomatic with it — match the relation (dependence, compatibility, indication), not the idiom.
Negated blanks. "Not ______ in the way a riddle is..." — the blank names what the author rejects. The deadliest distractor accurately describes the passage, which is exactly why it can't fill a negated blank.
Protocol: find the structural signal, predict a phrase, and eliminate only by pointing at a quoted phrase that contradicts the choice. Target 60 seconds.
