Each place in a number is 10 times the value of the place to its right.

Reading Numbers
The number 4,523 means:
- 4 thousands = 4,000
- 5 hundreds = 500
- 2 tens = 20
- 3 ones = 3
So
This is called expanded form.
Comparing Numbers
Use place value to compare numbers from left to right:
- because in the hundreds place,
Symbols: (less than), (greater than), (equal to)
Patterns with 10
- (the digit moves one place to the left)
- (the digit moves one place to the right)
