Understanding Place Value

Place Value Chart

Each place in a number is 10 times the value of the place to its right.

| Millions | Hundred Thousands | Ten Thousands | Thousands | Hundreds | Tens | Ones | |---|---|---|---|---|---|---| | 1,000,000 | 100,000 | 10,000 | 1,000 | 100 | 10 | 1 |

Reading Numbers

The number 4,523 means:

  • 4 thousands = 4,000
  • 5 hundreds = 500
  • 2 tens = 20
  • 3 ones = 3

So 4,523=4,000+500+20+34,523 = 4,000 + 500 + 20 + 3

This is called expanded form.

Comparing Numbers

Use place value to compare numbers from left to right:

  • 3,456<3,7893,456 < 3,789 because in the hundreds place, 4<74 < 7

Symbols: << (less than), >> (greater than), == (equal to)

Patterns with 10

  • 30ร—10=30030 \times 10 = 300 (the digit moves one place to the left)
  • 4,000รท10=4004,000 \div 10 = 400 (the digit moves one place to the right)

Practice: Write 7,305 in expanded form: 7,000+300+0+57,000 + 300 + 0 + 5
