The core idea, one worked example, and short practice.
Learn step-by-step with practice exercises built right in.
A transition is a word or short phrase that connects two sentences. On the SAT you get two sentences with a blank between them, and you pick the word that names how they are related.
There are six families to know. Adding: also, in addition, furthermore. Contrast: however, but, on the other hand, nevertheless. Cause and effect: therefore, so, as a result. Example: for example, for instance, specifically. Sequence: first, next, then, finally. Conclusion: in conclusion, ultimately, in short.
The method that works every time: cover the blank and the choices. Say the sentence before it in your own words, then the sentence after it. Ask one question โ same direction, or opposite? Opposite means contrast. Only then look at the choices.
Organization questions ask where a sentence belongs. Follow the pointing-back words โ she, it, this, they. Whatever they point to must already have been named.
