Algebra 2 builds on Algebra 1 and Geometry to deepen and broaden students' command of functions, equations, and algebraic structure, serving as the key bridge to precalculus and calculus. The course extends earlier work to a wider range of function families: quadratic functions and the complex-number solutions of quadratic equations, polynomial functions of higher degree, rational and radical functions, and—centrally—exponential and logarithmic functions. Students also study systems of equations and inequalities, sequences and series, and an introduction to trigonometry and the unit circle in many curricula, along with a unit on probability and statistics in some standards frameworks. A defining new idea is the introduction of imaginary and complex numbers, which lets students solve every quadratic and understand the Fundamental Theorem of Algebra. Algebra 2 demands more abstraction and stamina than Algebra 1: problems often require multiple representations, transformations of parent functions, and reasoning about domain, range, asymptotes, and end behavior across many function types simultaneously. Students most commonly struggle with logarithms (especially treating them as the inverse of exponentials), with manipulating rational expressions and identifying extraneous solutions in radical and rational equations, and with the sheer number of function families they must keep distinct. Because standards differ by state and curriculum, assessment occurs through coursework and, in some states, end-of-course exams. Effective preparation emphasizes mastering parent functions and their transformations, understanding inverse relationships (particularly exponential-logarithmic), checking for extraneous solutions, and connecting symbolic, graphical, and numerical views. This fluency is precisely what precalculus and AP Calculus assume students already possess.
