Numerical Expressions

Write and interpret numerical expressions

Numerical Expressions

What is a Numerical Expression?

A numerical expression is a math problem with numbers and operations (+, โˆ’, ร—, รท) but NO equal sign.

Examples of numerical expressions:

  • 5 + 3
  • 12 ร— 4 - 7
  • (8 + 2) รท 5
  • 20 - 3 ร— 4 + 6

NOT expressions (these are equations):

  • 5 + 3 = 8 (has equal sign)
  • x + 7 (has a variable)

Key: Expressions show a calculation but don't have an answer written yet!

Parts of an Expression

Numbers: 3, 15, 100, etc. Operations: +, โˆ’, ร—, รท Grouping symbols: ( ), [ ], { }

Example: (12 + 3) ร— 5 - 2

  • Numbers: 12, 3, 5, 2
  • Operations: +, ร—, โˆ’
  • Grouping: ( )

Evaluating Expressions

To evaluate means to find the value (solve it).

Example: Evaluate 7 + 3

7 + 3 = 10

The value of the expression is 10 โœ“

Order of Operations (PEMDAS)

To evaluate expressions with multiple operations, use PEMDAS!

P - Parentheses E - Exponents M - Multiplication D - Division A - Addition S - Subtraction

Example: Evaluate 6 + 3 ร— 2

Wrong way: 6 + 3 = 9, then 9 ร— 2 = 18 โœ—

Right way: 3 ร— 2 = 6, then 6 + 6 = 12 โœ“

Always multiply BEFORE adding!

Simple Expressions

One Operation

Example 1: 8 + 5 Value = 13 โœ“

Example 2: 20 - 7 Value = 13 โœ“

Example 3: 6 ร— 4 Value = 24 โœ“

Example 4: 15 รท 3 Value = 5 โœ“

Easy! Just do the one operation.

Two Operations (Same Level)

Example: 12 + 5 + 3

Work left to right: 12 + 5 = 17 17 + 3 = 20 โœ“

Example: 20 โˆ’ 8 โˆ’ 4

Work left to right: 20 โˆ’ 8 = 12 12 โˆ’ 4 = 8 โœ“

Expressions with Different Operations

Addition and Subtraction

Work left to right

Example: 15 + 7 โˆ’ 3

15 + 7 = 22 22 โˆ’ 3 = 19 โœ“

Multiplication and Division

Work left to right

Example: 20 รท 4 ร— 2

20 รท 4 = 5 5 ร— 2 = 10 โœ“

Mixed Operations (Use PEMDAS!)

Example: 5 + 3 ร— 4

Multiply first: 3 ร— 4 = 12 Then add: 5 + 12 = 17 โœ“

Example: 18 รท 3 + 2

Divide first: 18 รท 3 = 6 Then add: 6 + 2 = 8 โœ“

Using Parentheses

Parentheses tell you do this first!

Example: (5 + 3) ร— 4

Step 1: Parentheses first 5 + 3 = 8

Step 2: Multiply 8 ร— 4 = 32 โœ“

Compare without parentheses: 5 + 3 ร— 4 3 ร— 4 = 12 5 + 12 = 17 โœ“

Different answer! Parentheses matter!

Writing Expressions from Words

Words: "12 decreased by 7" Expression: 12 โˆ’ 7 โœ“

Words: "20 divided by 4" Expression: 20 รท 4 โœ“

Words: "3 times the sum of 5 and 2" Expression: 3 ร— (5 + 2) โœ“ (Parentheses show "sum of 5 and 2" happens first!)

Complex Expressions

Example 1: Evaluate (15 โˆ’ 3) รท 4 + 5

Step 1: Parentheses 15 โˆ’ 3 = 12

Step 2: Division 12 รท 4 = 3

Step 3: Addition 3 + 5 = 8 โœ“

Example 2: Evaluate 20 โˆ’ 4 ร— 3 + 6

Step 1: Multiply (M comes before A and S) 4 ร— 3 = 12

Step 2: Now we have: 20 โˆ’ 12 + 6

Step 3: Work left to right 20 โˆ’ 12 = 8 8 + 6 = 14 โœ“

Multiple Grouping Symbols

Example: 5 ร— [(12 โˆ’ 4) รท 2]

Step 1: Innermost parentheses 12 โˆ’ 4 = 8

Step 2: Now: 5 ร— [8 รท 2]

Step 3: Division inside brackets 8 รท 2 = 4

Step 4: Multiply 5 ร— 4 = 20 โœ“

Rule: Work from the inside out!

Equivalent Expressions

Different expressions can have the same value.

Example:

  • 5 + 5 + 5 = 15
  • 3 ร— 5 = 15
  • 10 + 5 = 15
  • 30 รท 2 = 15

All these expressions equal 15, so they're equivalent! โœ“

Distributive Property

The distributive property lets you rewrite expressions.

Example: 3 ร— (4 + 2)

Method 1: Parentheses first 3 ร— (4 + 2) = 3 ร— 6 = 18 โœ“

Method 2: Distribute (multiply each term inside) 3 ร— (4 + 2) = (3 ร— 4) + (3 ร— 2) = 12 + 6 = 18 โœ“

Both give the same answer!

General form: a ร— (b + c) = (a ร— b) + (a ร— c)

Real-World Expressions

Shopping: You buy 3 shirts at 12eachand2hatsat12 each and 2 hats at 8 each. Total cost? Expression: 3 ร— 12 + 2 ร— 8 Value: 36 + 16 = $52 โœ“

Lunch: You have 20.Youspend20. You spend 7 on lunch and 5onasnack.Moneyleft?โˆ—โˆ—Expression:โˆ—โˆ—20โˆ’7โˆ’5โˆ—โˆ—Value:โˆ—โˆ—13โˆ’5=5 on a snack. Money left? **Expression:** 20 โˆ’ 7 โˆ’ 5 **Value:** 13 โˆ’ 5 = 8 โœ“

Sharing: 24 cookies divided equally among 4 friends, then each friend gets 2 more. Expression: 24 รท 4 + 2 Value: 6 + 2 = 8 cookies each โœ“

Common Mistakes

โŒ Mistake 1: Ignoring order of operations Wrong: 5 + 3 ร— 2 = 8 ร— 2 = 16 โœ— Right: 5 + 3 ร— 2 = 5 + 6 = 11 โœ“

โŒ Mistake 2: Forgetting parentheses change everything (5 + 3) ร— 2 โ‰  5 + 3 ร— 2 16 โ‰  11

โŒ Mistake 3: Working right to left instead of left to right For same-level operations, go LEFT to RIGHT!

Writing Your Own Expressions

Possible answers:

  1. 20 + 4
  2. 6 ร— 4
  3. 30 โˆ’ 6
  4. 48 รท 2

๐Ÿ“š Practice Problems

1Problem 1easy

โ“ Question:

Evaluate the expression: 15 + 8 - 3

๐Ÿ’ก Show Solution

Work from left to right since we only have addition and subtraction.

Step 1: Add first 15 + 8 = 23

Step 2: Subtract 23 - 3 = 20

Answer: 20

2Problem 2easy

โ“ Question:

Write a numerical expression for: "five times the sum of 6 and 4"

๐Ÿ’ก Show Solution

Break down the phrase:

  • "sum of 6 and 4" means 6 + 4
  • "five times" means multiply by 5
  • Since it says "the sum" first, we need parentheses

Expression: 5 ร— (6 + 4)

We can also evaluate it: 5 ร— (6 + 4) = 5 ร— 10 = 50

Answer: 5 ร— (6 + 4) or 5(6 + 4)

3Problem 3medium

โ“ Question:

Simplify: 3(4 + 2) using the distributive property.

๐Ÿ’ก Show Solution

The distributive property says: a(b + c) = ab + ac

Apply it to 3(4 + 2):

Step 1: Multiply 3 by each number inside the parentheses 3 ร— 4 = 12 3 ร— 2 = 6

Step 2: Add the products 12 + 6 = 18

Check: 3(4 + 2) = 3(6) = 18 โœ“

Answer: 18

4Problem 4medium

โ“ Question:

Write a numerical expression for: "20 decreased by the product of 3 and 4"

๐Ÿ’ก Show Solution

Break down the phrase:

  • "product of 3 and 4" means 3 ร— 4
  • "decreased by" means subtract
  • Start with 20, then subtract

Expression: 20 - (3 ร— 4)

Evaluate: 20 - (3 ร— 4) = 20 - 12 = 8

Answer: 20 - (3 ร— 4) or 20 - 3 ร— 4

5Problem 5hard

โ“ Question:

Are these expressions equivalent? Explain. Expression A: 2(5 + 3) Expression B: 2 ร— 5 + 3

๐Ÿ’ก Show Solution

Let's evaluate both expressions:

Expression A: 2(5 + 3) Step 1: Parentheses first 5 + 3 = 8 Step 2: Multiply 2 ร— 8 = 16

Expression B: 2 ร— 5 + 3 Step 1: Multiply first (PEMDAS) 2 ร— 5 = 10 Step 2: Add 10 + 3 = 13

Expression A = 16 Expression B = 13

Answer: NO, they are NOT equivalent. The parentheses in Expression A make a big difference! However, 2(5 + 3) IS equivalent to 2 ร— 5 + 2 ร— 3 (distributive property).
